Life in Westwego
I moved to Westwego in 1981, when I married my dear, late husband, Steve Valence. Steve had served on the council for 12 years, and after he passed away, I wanted to continue serving our community and ran for Councilmember, District 3. I served as councilman for eight years.
Steve and I raised two daughters who still live in Westwego. My oldest daughter is Julie Valence, and my youngest is Katie Reine, married to Ted Reine, Jr, proud parents of my grandson,Ted Reine III, and granddaughter, Stevie Lynn Reine.
I have been a public servant my entire life, working in both Orleans and Jefferson Parish school districts. During this time I taught 12 years of Kindergarten at Vic Pitre Elementary School and served 2 years as principal of Westwego Elementary. Currently I am teaching sixth grade math at Patrick Taylor Science & Technology Academy.
I have always volunteered in Westwego. I worked closely with our Committee on Aging for over 25 years, and I am a lifetime member of the Westwego Civic Association and the WVFD Auxiliary. I am currently a member of the Westwego Historical Society, and over the years, have worked with the Beautification Committee and as a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. In 1990. my family and I began "Christmas Under the Trees" at "Catfish" Bourgeois Park. For over 20 years we have had Westwego families and organizations celebrate the holiday with lights and music inside the walking track.
